Types of Headaches

A headache refers to any pain located in your head or face. There are many types of headaches with many different causes. Some of the most familiar headaches include:

  1. Cervicogenic headaches: These headaches, often referred to as tension headaches, are the most common type of headache in adults. They can be a result of problems in your neck or jaw, poor posture, fatigue, and stress.

  2. Migraine headaches: These headaches generally involve moderate to severe pain on one side of the head. They are often associated with sensitivity to light or noise, nausea and vomiting, and loss of appetite. They can last from several hours to several days.

  3. Cluster headaches: One of the rarest types of headaches, cluster headaches involve severe pain around one eye and side of the face. They tend to occur in groups, or clusters. They may come multiple times per day for weeks or even months.

  4. Cranial neuralgias: This diagnosis refers to pain associated with dysfunction of any one of your 12 cranial nerves – the nerves that originate in your brain and travel through your head. As a result, you may feel pain or other sensations, like numbness or tingling, anywhere on your head, including your face, eyes, mouth, and ears.

  5. Secondary headaches: A headache that comes from an underlying condition is considered a secondary headache. Some underlying conditions that cause headaches include fevers, infections, tumors, brain injuries, and strokes.

  6. Chronic headaches: Any type of headache can become chronic. If you experience 15 or more headache episodes per month for at least 3 months, you may be diagnosed with chronic headaches. Early intervention to treat headaches can decrease the risk that they will become chronic.

Causes of Headaches

Headaches can happen for different reasons; figuring out what's causing them is important for finding the right treatment. At Indepth Physical Therapy, we focus on finding and treating the root cause of your headaches. Some common causes include:

  1. Poor Posture: Sitting and standing with poor posture can put increased stress on your neck and back. Poor posture is increasingly common when you spend a lot of time on your computer or phone. This can lead to headaches. Physical therapy helps improve your posture to relieve the strain on your muscles and joints.

  2. Muscle Tightness: Tense muscles in your neck, shoulders, and upper back can cause headaches. This tension can come from stress, repetitive activities, or poor posture. Physical therapy uses hands-on techniques and stretches to release tense muscles and help you move better.

  3. Stress and Lifestyle Habits: Stress can make your muscles tighten, especially around your neck and shoulders, which can cause headaches. Sitting too much, not getting enough exercise, or having poor sleep habits can all contribute to headaches. At Indepth Physical Therapy, we teach you how to manage stress, improve your work setup, and stay active to help reduce headaches.

  4. Migraines and Other Types of Headaches: Migraines are more complex and involve the brain, but physical therapy can still help. By improving posture, releasing muscle tension, and using relaxation techniques, physical therapy can work alongside other treatments to reduce migraine pain and frequency.

By treating the specific cause of your headaches, we can help decrease both the frequency and severity of your headaches.

At Indepth Physical Therapy, we treat the cause of headaches, not just the pain. Our approach is all about understanding your unique situation and offering treatments that fit your needs. Here are a few ways physical therapy can help with headaches:

  1. Manual Therapy: This hands-on treatment helps relieve tension in your neck, shoulders, and upper back. By gently working on these areas, we can reduce muscle tension that often causes headaches and improve your overall movement.

  2. Posture Training: Many headaches come from poor posture, especially if you spend long hours sitting or working at a computer. We’ll show you exercises to correct your posture and give you tips to avoid the strain that leads to headaches in the first place.

  3. Exercise-Based Therapy: We’ll guide you through specific stretches and strengthening exercises that target the muscles causing your headaches. These exercises not only provide relief but also help prevent headaches from returning.

  4. Education and Ergonomics: Sometimes, small changes in how you sit, stand, or sleep can make a big difference. We’ll teach you ways to adjust your daily habits and workspace setup to reduce the chance of headaches in the future.

By focusing on what’s causing your headaches and offering treatments designed just for you, our goal is to help you find lasting relief and feel like yourself again!

At Indepth Physical Therapy, we make sure your treatment is as personal and effective as possible. Our process is simple and designed to fit your needs every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Initial Consultation: We start with a one-on-one session where we get to know you, your health history, and your headache patterns. This helps us understand the root cause of your headaches so we can create a plan just for you.

  2. Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on what we learn in the consultation, we’ll develop a treatment plan that fits your unique situation. Whether you need manual therapy, postural training, or exercises to strengthen certain muscles, we’ll guide you through each step to relieve your headaches.

  3. Ongoing Support: Your progress is important to us, so we’re here for you even after you start feeling better. We offer telehealth options if you can’t make it to the clinic, and we’ll provide at-home exercises to keep you on track. Regular follow-ups ensure that your headaches stay under control and don’t come back.

Our goal is to help you not just feel better in the short term but to give you tools and support for long-term headache relief as well. We’re with you every step of the way, so you can get back to living your life without the pain!
